The Early Literacy Specialists support early literacy and numeracy throughout York Region by providing resources, workshops, programs and consultations for parents, caregivers and early childhood professionals.

What is Early Literacy? Why is it so Important?

Early literacy begins at birth via daily interactions with family and caregivers, including talking, touching, singing and smiling, nursery rhymes and playing peek-a-boo. As children grow and take part in everyday activities such as reading a favourite book, following a recipe, or writing a thank you note, they learn to read and write – the “big things” that make school and future learning easier.

What is Numeracy for Young Children? Why is it so Important?

Like reading and writing skills, math skills start long before school begins. Preschool numeracy skills are powerful predictors of later school success. What families and caregivers do daily, such as sorting socks, counting toes, noticing who got a bigger piece of cake, and setting the table prepare children for future math success.
