Self-regulation and marshmallows. Children who can understand and regulate their own emotions and know how to deal with the emotions of others do better academically and socially. In the 1960’s, Stanford University conducted a research study on self-control with four-year-olds – it was called “the marshmallow test”. The children were told they could have one marshmallow now or if they waited 15 minutes, they could have two marshmallows.
