Statement on the discovery of unmarked graves in Cowessess First Nation

Family Day is deeply saddened by the news this week that 751 unmarked graves have been discovered by the Cowessess First Nation on the former site of Marieval Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan.  This is deeply rooted in systemic racism and is a tragic part of the history and ongoing experience of this country.

We must acknowledge and take action to understand the tragic legacies, trauma and intergenerational impact on Indigenous communities and peoples. We must also recognize the critical importance of Truth and Reconciliation.

An Indian Residential Schools Crisis Line (1-866-925-4419) is available 24 hours a day for anyone experiencing pain or distress as a result of his or her residential school experience.  You will find more information and resources on the Truth & Conciliation Commission HERE.
